Top 3 Signature Drinks for Your Holiday Party: Cheers to the Season!

Holiday parties are all about good vibes, great company, and, of course, festive drinks! Whether you’re sipping something sparkly by the fire or raising a glass at a corporate bash, having a few signature cocktails (and mocktails!) on deck is a must. The key? Choose drinks that are easy to make, customizable with or without alcohol, and feel just a little extra special. Let’s toast to the season with these three holiday-ready recipes that’ll have your guests raving.

1. Cranberry Margarita (Large Batch)

A refreshing, festive margarita that’s easy to adjust based on your preference for alcohol or non-alcoholic options.

Ingredients (for about 4-5 servings):

  • 2/3 cup cranberry juice
  • 1/3 cup fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 cup silver tequila (or swap with rum, gin, or leave out for a non-alcoholic version)
  • 2 tbsp orange liqueur (like Cointreau) or orange juice for a non-alcoholic version
  • 2 tbsp agave syrup or simple syrup (adjust to taste)
  • Fresh cranberries and lime slices for garnish
  • Salt or sugar for rimming glasses (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a large pitcher, combine cranberry juice, lime juice, tequila (or other alcohol), orange liqueur (or juice), and agave syrup. Stir well.
  2. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  3. Rim glasses with lime juice and dip into salt or sugar if desired. Pour the mix over ice, garnish with cranberries and lime slices, and serve!

2. Festive Shot: Jolly Jello Shots (Large Batch, 1/3 Recipe)

A fun and easy shot option that’s perfect for a rowdy crowd. Non-alcoholic options can also be made by using fruit juice instead of alcohol. Welcome each guest to the party with a festive shooter!

Ingredients (makes about 10 shots):

  • 1/3 box of red Jell-O (strawberry or cherry flavor)
  • 1/3 cup boiling water
  • 1/3 cup cold water
  • 1/3 cup vodka (or rum, or use a fruit juice like cranberry or apple juice for non-alcoholic)
  • Whipped cream for topping (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve the Jell-O in 1/3 cup boiling water. Stir until completely dissolved.
  2. Add cold water and vodka (or other alcohol or fruit juice). Stir well.
  3. Pour into shot glasses or small plastic cups and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or until firm.
  4. Top with whipped cream if desired before serving. Enjoy!

3. Peppermint White Russian (Large Batch, 1/3 Recipe)

A creamy, minty holiday treat. You can swap the alcohol to fit your guests’ preferences or serve it without alcohol for a festive mocktail.

Ingredients (for about 4-5 servings):

  • 2/3 cup heavy cream
  • 1/3 cup peppermint schnapps (or use Baileys Irish Cream, Kahlúa, or leave out for a non-alcoholic version)
  • 2/3 cup vodka (or rum for a twist, or skip for a non-alcoholic version)
  • Crushed peppermint candy or candy cane pieces for garnish

Instructions:

  1. In a pitcher, combine the heavy cream, peppermint schnapps, and vodka (or substitute). Stir well.
  2. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  3. Pour over ice, garnish with crushed peppermint candy, and serve!

5 Tips to Be the Ultimate Holiday Host (or Designated Host Extraordinaire!)

Whether you’re throwing a cozy holiday party, hosting a corporate mixer, or celebrating a big life milestone, being a great host—or having a designated host—can make all the difference. Think of a host as the secret ingredient to a memorable event: someone who ensures guests are happy, entertained, and, most importantly, relaxed. Hosting doesn’t have to be overwhelming—it’s all about making the experience enjoyable for everyone, including yourself! Let’s dive into five tips that will make you the ultimate holiday host.

1. Warm Welcomes: Set the Vibe from the Start

The moment your guests walk in, greet them with a smile, a genuine “I’m so happy you’re here!” and, if possible, a drink in hand. A simple welcome immediately sets a friendly, relaxed tone. Give a quick tour of the space—show them where they can stash their coats, the restroom location, and, of course, where the food and drinks are. You want your guests to feel like they belong, not like they’re wondering where to hover next.

Pro Tip: Have a signature drink or a fun mocktail ready to offer as a conversation starter! Check-out our favorite recipes HERE

2. The Great Connector: Introduce, Introduce, Introduce

We’ve all been to events where you unintentionally cling to the one person you know. Don’t let that happen at your gathering! Make it your mission to introduce guests to each other, especially those from different circles. Pair up people with shared interests (“You both love hiking! You have to swap trail stories!”). Not only will this prevent cliques from forming, but it also keeps the energy flowing.

Pro Tip: Have a few icebreaker questions in your back pocket in case the chatter needs a little boost.

3. Keep Drinks Full and Snacks Flowing

One of the simplest ways to keep the good times rolling? Make sure no one’s glass goes empty or plate goes bare. Regularly check in with your guests to offer drink refills or pass around snacks. If you’ve hired staff, work with them to ensure they’re circulating at the right pace. Nothing kills a vibe like an empty appetizer tray or a parched guest!

Pro Tip: Set up a self-serve drink station or grazing table to make things easy, but still float around to check in.

4. Venue Management: Keep the Space in Check

Behind every seamless event is someone quietly managing the details. Be that person or have someone designated to manage the venue flow. Keep an eye on trash cans (empty them before they overflow), check on the food supply, and ensure the music is at the perfect volume. You don’t need to micromanage—just be aware so small issues don’t turn into big distractions.

Pro Tip: Hire help! Companies like Party Host Helpers can handle these logistics so you can focus on enjoying the event, not managing it.

5. Keep it Light, Fun, and Celebratory

Remember: this is a celebration! If the host is stressed, guests will feel it. Be playful, be present, and laugh at the little mishaps (because let’s face it, there will be a few). Your energy will set the tone, so if you’re having fun, your guests will too.

Pro Tip: Have a couple of quick games or activities up your sleeve in case there’s a lull—it’s always good to keep things lively!

Bonus: Don’t Forget the Thank-Yous!

As the party winds down, thank your guests for coming and send them off with a warm farewell. If you really want to go the extra mile, a small parting favor (like a mini treat or keepsake) can leave a lasting impression.

Final Thoughts:
Hosting isn’t about perfection; it’s about creating a space where people feel welcome, cared for, and entertained. Whether you’re hands-on or hiring help, a little thoughtfulness goes a long way. So, pour yourself a drink, smile big, and enjoy the party—you’ve got this!

Rethinking Wedding Favors: A Modern Take on a Classic Tradition

Recently, we shared a TikTok in our “Wedding Etiquette pt. 15” series, diving into the traditional practice of wedding guest favors. This sparked an engaging conversation about the relevance of these tokens in today’s weddings, and we couldn’t help but express our evolving views on this age-old custom. This had us Rethinking Wedding Favors, offering A Modern Take on a Classic Tradition.

The tradition of giving wedding favors is steeped in history, tracing back to the French aristocracy and upper classes. The term “wedding favor” originates from the French word bonbonnière, which literally means “box of bonbons.” These bonbonnières were luxurious small gift boxes filled with sweets or other treats, bestowed upon guests as a gesture of gratitude and to wish them good luck.

While this tradition carries a certain charm, we believe it’s time to modernize and personalize the concept of wedding favors. The days of generic chocolates, mints, and trinkets are behind us. Instead, we are advocating for favors that enhance the wedding experience, reflect the couple’s personality, and offer genuine value to guests. Here are some of our favorite contemporary favor ideas:

1. Calligraphy Keepsakes

Introduce a touch of elegance and personalization with a live calligraphy artist at your reception. They can create bespoke items for guests throughout the evening, such as luggage tags, themed cups, or key chains. These keepsakes not only align with your wedding theme but also provide a unique, memorable experience for your guests.

2. Personalized Bottles

For weddings at vineyards, in Italy, or in Sonoma, consider gifting personalized bottles of wine or olive oil. Elevate this favor by having a sommelier on-site to educate guests about the bottle they’re receiving. This not only adds an interactive element but also deepens the appreciation of the gift.

3. Late Night Bites

If your celebration extends into the late hours, offer a “late night bite” option. Personalize containers or tickets and surprise your guests with a delicious treat they can enjoy immediately. This thoughtful gesture will be a welcome delight as the night progresses.

4. A Flower for the Night

Channel the romance of classic movies with a single, beautiful flower or a small bouquet for each guest. This simple yet elegant gesture allows guests to enjoy a touch of natural beauty throughout the evening and take a piece of the celebration home with them.

WBL : M + K Wedding
WBL M + K Wedding

When selecting wedding favors, we like to follow a few guiding principles:

  1. Enhance the Experience: Does the favor add to the overall wedding experience?
  2. Personalization: Is the favor personalized for the guest?
  3. Practicality: Will guests actually want or use this item?
  4. Convenience: Is it easy for guests to use on-site or take home (considering travel, hotels, etc.)?

In reimagining wedding favors, we encourage couples to think beyond tradition and opt for items that are meaningful, memorable, and truly enhance their guests’ experience. Whether it’s through personalized calligraphy, a taste of fine wine, a late-night snack, or a romantic flower, the right favor can leave a lasting impression and a heartfelt thank you.

Emily & Ra’s Timeless Spring Celebration: A Dreamy Italian Inspired Wedding at Hilton Lake Las Vegas

Wedding Day Team:

Photographer: Amber & Co Photography

Videographer: Lex Get Raw

Venue: Lake Las Vegas Hilton

String Quartet: Las Vegas Music Oasis

Hair & Make-Up : Beauty Studios Inc

In the picturesque setting of early spring, amidst the allure of Lake Las Vegas, Emily and Ra embarked on a journey to bring the timeless romance of the Italian coast to life. Choosing the stunning Hilton Lake Las Vegas as their venue, the WBL team helped to craft a celebration that seamlessly blended classic elegance with natural luxury. Leaving a lasting impression on our couple and their guest.

A Romantic Setting To Say “I DO”

Nestled within the beauty of Hilton Lake Las Vegas, Emily and Ra found the perfect backdrop for their dream wedding. With its stunning Italian chapel overlooking the tranquil waters, the stage was set for a ceremony that exuded romance and sophistication. In the early spring sun, the couple exchanged vows in a heartfelt ceremony, surrounded by the love of their closest family and friends.

Tented Reception by the Water

Following the ceremony, guests were treated to a reception under a beautifully adorned tent. This offered all guest panoramic views of the gorgeous water at sunset. The atmosphere was nothing short of magical as laughter and joy filled the air, creating memories that will last a lifetime. The tented reception provided the perfect blend of elegance and intimacy, allowing guests to dine and dance the night away.

Timeless Elegance in Decor

Emily and Ra envisioned a wedding style that was both classic and natural. They asked our team for a focus on lush draping greens and timeless white florals. Working closely with our WBL design studio, we brought the couple’s vision to life in every detail of the wedding design. From the elegant drapery adorning the chapel doors to the exquisite floral arrangements gracing the reception tables, every element was meticulously curated to reflect the beauty of the Italian coast.

Floral Magic

The floral team at WBL design studio played a pivotal role in bringing Emily and Ra’s vision to fruition. In particular, when designing Emily’s unique bridal bouquet, a challenge arose. Following a delayed bloom, our specialty floral farm was unable to provide the requested stephanotis, crucial for the bouquet’s foundation. As a result, just two days before the wedding, our design team managed to procure the nearest substitute: white tweedia and lily of the valley.

Conclusion

As the night sky sparkled with stars, Emily and Ra’s timeless celebration came to a close. They headed off, leaving behind memories that will be cherished by everyone for years to come. From the romantic setting of Lake Las Vegas to the elegant decor, every aspect of their wedding day was a testament to their love. And as they embarked on the next chapter of their journey together, they knew that their love would only continue to grow stronger with each passing day.

The Beginning

Step into the enchanting world of Madeline and Jack’s Californian wedding in a historic courtyard. Their journey, marked by serendipity and resilience, led them to the picturesque Franciscan Gardens in San Juan Capistrano, California. Against the backdrop of rustic charm and lush greenery, their vision of blending glamour with bohemian chic came to life in a celebration that was truly unforgettable.

This wedding story unfolded like a novel starting with Jack working in San Francisco, while Madeline was finishing her courses to become a licensed midwife hundreds of miles away in the Midwest. Their adventure was marked with a snare when their original wedding planner closed their doors after the pandemic. With a serendipitous blend of fate and fortuity they connected with our team. Having already discovered and contracted their ideal venue the foundation was set for us to begin masterfully crafting the couple’s perfect day.

The Inspiration

Inspired by the beauty of nature and the free spirit of wildflower aesthetics, Madeline and Jack envisioned a wedding that would narrate their love story through a contemporary lens. The historic Franciscan Gardens provided the ideal setting for their summer celebration. Where the courtyard’s rustic charm and old-world garden created a magical atmosphere for their 100 guests.

Madeline’s anticipation on the wedding day was palpable as she prepared to marry Jack in her sleek and chic wedding dress. Despite a setback with her original bouquet choice due to a heat wave, vibrant poppies from a boutique farm in Connecticut became the stunning highlight.

Set in the historic walls and tranquil fountain, Madeline and Jack shared a first look filled with pure emotion. This set the stage for a ceremony that seamlessly blended tradition with personal touches.

Under a canopy of twinkling lights and amidst lush greenery, the couple exchanged vows, surrounded by the timeless elegance of rustic charm. The meticulous care of our team transformed the venue into a living masterpiece, perfumed with wildflowers and illuminated by dreamlike candlelight.

The Couple: Stacy and Jon:

One of our beautiful couples, Stacy and Jon, allowed us the privilege of planning their magical day. They wanted a modern yet retro and fun wedding, focusing on playful elements to encapsulate and represent their love for one another. We can often tell which type of couple we are working with by focusing on the details of their hopes and dreams for the wedding. This scenario was no different.

Stacy and Jon wanted to incorporate the fun, funky nature of Las Vegas with a nod to Stacys island roots. Tropical decor, a green & white color scheme, with a little bit of disco were able to bring this day to life.

Tropical disco inspired wedding decor

This unique sweetheart table was hand crafted on site, and was fit only for royalty! With the disco balls symbolizing their fun and loving nature, and the foliage overarching the design, Stacy and Jon were able to sit down and bask in their love for one another during the entire wedding reception.

Unique sweetheart table with tropical leaves and disco balls

During the design process Stacy and Jon were able to hand pick elements from each of the proposed looks for their tropical white and green scheme. They preferred disco balls and tropical greens including a signature disco ball wedding chandelier. This statement piece in their design was dazzling and fun.  Disco balls and Monstera leaves made for a magnificent combination; the words ‘chic’ and ‘retro’ come to mind.

Jon and Stacy focused their reception décor on welcoming guests and setting an atmosphere of play to thank them for being a part of their magical day. This was what Weddings by Leigh focused on during the design process.

We drew upon their loving and fun nature and their desire to bring this into their special day. Weddings by Leigh ensured that Stacy and Jon did not feel overwhelmed during the process and that all of their ideas and preferences were included in the reception.

We recommend rescheduling first because this is one of the easiest ways to maintain your original vision and many venues, vendors, guests will understand your predicament and do all they can to assist you.

2.) “Move” Your Event

Tan monochromatic wedding decor tented las vegas wedding

Sounds crazy right now but there are several states currently operating without COVID restrictions. You may move your event to a non-restricted state and have the freedom to build your dream wedding. Do keep in mind some family members may not feel comfortable traveling during this time so be prepared for some guest still declining.

3.) Reduce Guest Count

This is one of the hardest emotionally to do. How do you un-invite someone you love? Here is our recommended strategy for reducing guests. Highlight each guest type in a different color.

A. Family

B. Friends

C. Family you haven’t seen in 12 months or more.

D. Friends you haven’t seen in 3 months or more.

Start by removing guests from D & C. Write a lovely card to each expressing your apologies and gratitude for their understanding. Did you reach your guest count? If not, try this next approach.

Reduce to family only and couples only (no children) and consider having a party on your one-year anniversary for those you had to un-invite or remove from the list.

Still having trouble reducing your guest list? Consider only family or friends that are within driving distance.

4.) Private Property

Do you have a family member or friend with a house/yard big enough to support your guest count? This may be a great option for you. Private properties give couples a lot of freedom in planning without having to follow current business restrictions in your area. Beware, there are some hurdles to backyard weddings, before deciding to move forward check out our Backyard Wedding blog for a full scope on the challenges of backyard I Do’s.

California beach engagement with champagne bottle

It is officially Wedding Planning Season! With November – February being engagement season it is officially time for couples to begin the planning process. We have compiled our top tips for stress free wedding planning experience for any couple beginning their journey. You want to enjoy the planning experience and having the right foundation to get started will make all the difference.

Tip 1 – Set a budget!

Even if you end up changing your budget or plans its okay, start by talking money. Weddings do not need to be a financial drain or burden to be magical, but I want you to be prepared for the cost of things. Just like buying a car, I don’t want you to experience sticker shock, if you were expecting a Mercedes on a Honda budget.

Start with completing the Easy Budget Tool (Click Here to request your free download). You can either enter your number of guests or your estimated funds to see where those will most likely get allocated.

Tip 2 – See tip#1 … SET A BUDGET

Wedding budget for beginners infographic

We’re going to say it again! Setting a budget truly helps in decision making, design, venue selection, and everything else. Also, know that the single largest expense is food and drinks which is tied directly to your guest count. Need to cut cost? The easiest way is to reduce your guest count.

Tip 3 – Pick a date

Save the date post card from minted

Now that you have your finances in order (or so we hope) its time to pick a date! There are several different ways to approach date selection and here are a few.

  • Dream date – it is all the rage to select a date with numeric significance 10/10/2020, 12/21/21. 2/22/22. If you have your budget set and begin your venue search looking for your dream date you will be more prepared for the potential challenges of scheduling on a trendy date.
  • Length of engagement – are you in a rush? This may limit your selection at traditional venues as they often book 12 – 18 months in advance and sometimes even longer if it is a popular or historical site. If you have time to plan (and save $$$) then you will have access to a greater selection.
  • On a tight budget? – Monday – Thursdays are always less than Friday – Sunday. Pick mid-week and consider a breakfast, brunch or lunch ceremony/reception.
  • Season – Avoid peak wedding season to help save some money. April, May, September, and October, are the busiest wedding months and vendors do charge accordingly. Avoid peak season to save money on your venue and vendors.

Tip 4 – Get organized!

Wedding planner organizer binder

Break out the trusty 3 ring binder and organize the event into major sections in chronological order. You don’t need to rush and confirm an officiant before you have a venue and you won’t need a florist until you have a design. You will save hours of frustration and stress simply knocking things off the checklist in order. Think of the event in this order…

  1. When are you having it? (Pick your date)
  2. Who do you want to be there? (Confirm your guest count – this will dictate your venue options)
  3. Where will it be? (Confirm your venue)
  4. What will it look like? (design the wedding BEFORE you pick entertainment, invites, etc – wedding design drives the entire event experience)
  5. What will we do? (traditions, ceremony, dances, toasts – this all drives how the event is laid out and what vendors need to be confirmed)
  6. How are we notifying people? (invites, website, etc)
  7. Who is coming? (RSVP and contract final payments)

Tip 5 – Get help!

Mother of the bride and bridesmaids helping but the wedding dress on

If you are planning the DIY route, I suggest getting a trusted family member or friend to assist you with the day of details. If you are organized and have a clear vision of your wedding day you are a perfect candidate for the DIY strategy but when it comes to your big day you will want to turn the reigns over so you can enjoy the magic. One person will need to coordinate with your vendors on your behalf plus manage the timeline of events, I recommend a professional or a friend or family member that is willing to lean in to help make the day come to life.

For couples that desire being more hands off or need guidance, I recommend connecting with a wedding planner and/or designer as soon as you know your date or shortly after confirming your venue (some venues have full service planners included in your venue rental). Brining your planner in early on will ensure your wedding design and event are a cohesive seamless experience. Wedding planning is a long journey but can be enjoyable if you follow our tips for a stress free wedding planning experience.

Happy Planning! ~Christy Leigh Thom

“You only get one chance at a first impression, so start with the invitation!”

~Christy Leigh
Rustic inspired wedding invitation

I don’t know about you, but when I start planning a wedding the first thought that comes to mind is, “how is this going to be different than any other wedding?” Being the lead designer on our team I am also particularly sensitive to ensuring the couple’s individuality is also represented in their special day. I believe each couple should stand out from the crowd. I mean… It’s you, it’s your day it shouldn’t look like any other. Let’s look at 6 truly unique wedding invitation ideas below!

Personality meets style starting with the design phase. Our process begins by getting to know what our couple client likes their interests, hobbies, even home décor. (Because, what better way to understand your personality than getting a glimpse into your home.) Taking all the information we have plus looking at Pinterest boards or inspiration pictures, likes and dislikes, chosen venue and desired experience we start at the end and work our way to the beginning. Meaning, we create the entire vision of the day from what champagne will be served, to lighting, time of day, entertainment, weather, florals, colors, etc. Then we move into the details like signs, invitations, name cards and save the dates.

Which brings me to designing invitations that are as unique as you and give your guests a WOW first impression of your wedding day. Below are my favorite invitation ideas for making a fantastic and memorable first impression that is all your own.

1.) Get Artsy

Fall wedding invitation with sunflowers and burnt orange
Custom artwork for our bride who wanted a rustic inspired, fall wedding. The artwork will be used on all wedding stationery including name cards and welcome sign.

What better way to have a one-of-a-kind invite than one created by a fine artist? This is absolutely one of my favorite invite ideas because you can be as opulent or simplistic as you like and the art may be used for your welcome sign, menus, place cards, thank you and more.

2.) Mini Book

Photo book wedding invitation

There is nothing more unique to you than your story so share it with your guests in a mini book invite. Include pictures of you along with event details all in a keepsake style invite. To be honest we had a hard time finding an example of this specific idea (which should tell you how unique it is!). So we did this little mockup to give you a better idea of what it would look like. Keep it simple and small, include personal photos, and the wedding details. A 2×3 book is only $4.96 from Walmart and you can include your entire love story!

3.) A Sprig

Elegant wedding invitation with sprig of lavender

I am an absolute gluten for fresh herbs and flowers and for my BoHo couples this is my top pick for giving your guests a sneak peak at either what’s on the menu (slip in a sprig of cilantro or rosemary secured to your invite with jute). Or, the vibe of your nature inspired celebration (lavender, grass, baby’s breath sprigs tied with a simple ribbon). Try to keep the sprigs small and tight so they don’t make a mess of your guests counter when they open the invite.

4.) A Sprig + Eco Friendly

Eco-Friendly wedding invitation with plant seeds
Etsy is a great resource to use. These are only $0.93 each!

Take it a step further and send your invite on plantable paper!

5.) Venue Inspired

Wine bottle label wedding invitation
Labels can be found on Etsy and we suggest Trader Joes, or Costco for inexpensive wine choices unless it is in your budget to send a bottle from your winery.

I know, how vague! But here is what I mean, if you are getting married at a winery send a cork, a wine bottle, a bottle opener. If you are getting married on the beach, send a treasure map, a beach survival kit with sunscreen, glasses, sun visor each with another piece of info or message in a bottle.

6.) Puzzle Pieces

Wood puzzle piece wedding invitation

I fell in love with blank puzzles from Amazon because you make it into anything you want and when you share it the activity is fun to unravel the mystery. We used these last Christmas to give a ski trip spread out among lots of little gifts.

In todays world of Pinterest Weddings, and Instagram styled shoots it can be difficult to find truly unique wedding details for your day. It feels like everyone is doing the different versions of the same basic ideas. Hopefully these 6 truly unique wedding invitation ideas helped you get started on the right path. Cheap wedding reception place setting
5 easy wedding decor tips for a rustic wedding theme

Have you ever wondered how trends get started and why some take hold like wildfire and others fade off into obscurity? The easy answer is this, the fashion industry drives trends that influence almost every market you can imagine including weddings. And long story short, fashion insiders like designers and celebrities basically tell the rest of the world, “hey this hot”.

The people we see on TV, in movies, social circles, and on the web are leading drivers of trends and statisticians and marketers help guide where the investment dollars will go. The vested trends get the window (or virtual window) and shelf space which means it becomes what have most access to. The long and short of it (or rather epically simplified version) celebrity combined with industry = trend. Let’s be honest, who didn’t fall in love with Texas couple Chip and Joanna that brought us the romantic world of rustic farmhouse décor?

Boiled down this means for a DIY couple; trends = limits. It’s not easy to create your own look when most affordable choices all look the same. Paige and I decided we would take on the challenge of a white, rustic wedding without using any of the design staples that are presently flooding Pinterest, Instagram and retailers.

1.) Your Vase

Natural wedding decor centerpiece with white roses and eucalyptus

I am a glutton for clean lines and sophisticated design, so my first change is replacing bulky mason jars with Dollar Tree vases. This swap is about a $0.20 increase in cost per vase. Then add river rocks, fairy lights and florals for a romantic and simple centerpiece.

2.) Ditch the Wood

Inexpensive Nature inspired wedding centerpiece

My second swap is replacing the wood stump with a sprawling nature scape of greenery and polished river rock complimented by votive candles. Good news, this swap will save you big dollars! 9” rustic wood centerpieces are about $8.00 each compared to the nature scape, which is $1.00 for the bag of rock, $1.00 for greenery, and $1.00 for votive candles ($3.00 total).

3.) Place Settings

White and silvers wedding table setting with eucalyptus

Next up, I like add classics to the table by including a charger or china. For this setting we did both, to keep it chic and affordable stick with just the charger plate. These can be found online or at the Dollar Store for $1.00 an under.

4.) Have Some Fun

White and blue summer wedding table setting and napkin
While we didn’t add a colorful napkin this time, we did want to share a great example of how it can be easily done! Click Here to save it.

Swap bland for bold when it comes to your napkins! Whether you have a wood finished table or tablecloth your napkins are the easiest way to add a pop of color without breaking the bank or risking a dangerous mistake. Every color in the rainbow looks beautiful with white and natural colors. Add orange, emerald green, hot pink, cranberry red, sapphire blue. Get creative with a pocket fold placing your flatware in the fold and centering it on the plate for buffet service or charger for sit down.

5.) Florals

White roses and eucalyptus wedding decor

For our mock event I chose eucalyptus as my primary green and ivory roses. By doing so the eucalyptus is complimented by the silver accents (flatware and charger) creating a romantic, summer feel. Taking this same look, you can swap the eucalyptus for cedar or juniper to create a rich winter vide that would look beautiful with gold.

It can be so easy to get wrapped up in current trends especially when Pinterest, target, and instagram are all pushing the same designs and styles. But there are simple ways to stay in trend while also making some unique changes. If you ever get stuck or feel overwhelmed in the design process reach out to a trusted design team. We offer wedding designs as low as $250! Or, stay tuned for our next DIY mock event where we will be bringing on the color!

Avoid C19 heart break and analyze your wedding plans now before the decisions are made for you.

Did you know in the 1930s most American brides could not afford a wedding dress so they wore their best dress to a simple court house ceremony? How about in 1942 and 43, couples got engaged, sent out announcements on Monday, invitations via telegram (text message lol) on Wednesday, with a ceremony on Saturday? Couples in love have had to navigate monumental obstacles throughout different periods in time; culture, conflict, and trends, have all influenced weddings and often times resulted in a shift changing weddings from what they were to what they are today.

Unfortunately, brides and grooms today are facing some of the most frustrating and saddening wedding alterations due to the constantly changing mandates and restrictions in some counties, cities, and states across the US. We want you to know you are not alone and we understand you may be faced with some incredibly painful decisions right now so we are here to help! Below is the 5 steps every couple should be taking now to avoid heartbreak down the road. If you act and plan today you will feel in control moving forward through this ever changing terrain.

Why Couples Should Think Twice Before Ditching Their Original Wedding Plans For A Backyard Wedding.

Bride and groom standing in front of sunflower field

As couples and venues have been adjusting to current safety protocols we have seen the popularity of backyard weddings rising quickly. With venues establishing restrictions such as mandatory social distancing, masks, and reduced guest counts, many couples have found freedom in hosting events on private properties. Before jumping on the backyard wedding bandwagon here are 5 reasons planning a backyard wedding isn’t for you.

1.) Know What To Expect

A backyard wedding can be a great solution as opposed to postponing your wedding. But keep in mind it is still a backyard. If your original dream was a 5 star resort in Vail, a backyard simply will not feel the same. We are all for turning backyards into beautiful wedding wonderlands, sometimes you need to think further than just the ceremony though. Will you be using a family members house, a friends, or even your own? Typically this means you will be getting ready upstairs in someones personal home. Your photographer may struggle to find unique photo locations, there will be more work done to keep you hidden form the groom, and all in all there is a lack of separation from set-up, get ready spaces, photos, and event space. While the ceremony will feel magical some of the events leading up too, and after will feel a bit different.

2.) It Is What It Is

With that said, you and your fiancé should discuss your wedding expectations and if a backyard wedding will fulfill those. If your dream was a weekend getaway in a gorgeous new area following more traditional wedding rules you will need to come to terms with what elements you will be giving up and prioritizing the ones you can create.

Or, postpone your wedding to achieve your original goals. Backyard weddings can be beautiful and we have seen some amazing love stories play out it will not give you the same feeling that a dedicated wedding venue and traditional day of schedule will give you. To avoid disappointment during your day you need to accept that a backyard wedding will not feel the same as a traditional wedding venue. It can be and will be amazing but not the same. So adjust your expectations and appreciate the day for what it is!

3.) It Is Not A Guaranteed Money Saver

Some couples believe they will save loads of money using a backyard for free. Yes, you can save money hosting a wedding in a backyard vs a wedding venue. This is normally accomplished by adopting a more boho/ rustic style where, you genuinely use kitchen dishes from home, tables your family donates, and other decor items that do not need to be purchased. Often you will also see easier catering options like food trucks, or family made meals.

However, if you are trying to replicate the feeling of a traditional wedding venue you may actually spend more money doing so in your backyard. When you book with a wedding venue they typically include furniture rentals, sectioned off spaces, built in style/decor elements, and discounted wedding items. If you are planning to replicate these same things you will need to rent and supply every single item. This means you will be paying for: tables, chairs, linens, china, cutlery, lighting, bar set up, glassware, dance floors, etc etc etc. Think of every element you want to include in your wedding, itemize that list, and think of purchasing/renting each individual item. It adds up quick!

4.) Vendors Aren’t Used To Working In A Backyard

Backyard wedding drink and appetizer displays

One thing most couples don’t consider when planning a backyard wedding is that some backyards are, simply put, funky. Backyard layouts can be difficult for many reasons. When planning really take the time to consider each vendor being brought in and everything that vendor may need. Caterer’s will need a staging area, DJ’s need power, rented lighting will use a lot of that power, photographers and videographers often need a room to store equipment, and all of these vendors will need a restroom.

WBL rule of thumb, when planning an outdoor backyard wedding try to limit anytime guest are inside of the property. Having guest enter through a side gate in the yard and stay outside will help in masking the fact that you are at someones home. With that in mind you will need a designated restroom for guest and vendors. If possible keep these separate, and stock the guest restroom as if you were in a hotel. Little touches make all the difference!

Unfortunately we have seen too many vendors flounder in backyard environments because they are not cut and dry weddings. It takes a lot more creativity to bring it all together!

5.) Backyard Weddings Are A Lot Of Labor

Vintage inspired seating lounge in outdoor wedding venue

Our final warning, be prepared for a lot of manual labor. Again, you are setting everything up and bringing everything in individually. A great way to save money is to set up and decorate yourself, but it will take a lot of man power. Leading up to your wedding you may be more labor than princess. To avoid this you can absolutely bring in set up crews, or a handyman service to help but be prepared for the additional cost!

This is in no way to discourage you from living out your backyard dreams. These 5 reasons planning a backyard wedding won’t solve everything, are to give you realistic expectations on what the process and day will look like look. It is so important to know what you are getting into with a backyard wedding and what you are looking for out of it. We suggest couples looking to achieve an elegant event more similar to a traditional wedding venue absolutely look into hiring a full or partial wedding planner. Brining in a pro will help in not only utilizing the space in the best way possible, but also organizing the day and vendors to ensure there are no typical backyard hiccups.

An easy explanation for any bride on a budget who needs a little help along the way.

Wedding ceremony in the mountains couple holding white Mr. and Mrs. balloons.

The world of wedding planning can often be confusing and stressful. There are a lot of options out there for brides looking to have a stress free wedding planning experience but cannot afford a full service wedding planner. When looking at different wedding planning packages we always suggest considering the cost of the service, your budget, and what you may be giving up to include this service. If you have a $15,000 wedding budget a $4,000 wedding planner is going to take a big chunk of that budget right away, are you giving up a non-negotiable? At this point you may be thinking, but I still need some planning help though! This is exactly where Partial Wedding Planning packages come in. The only tricky part is how to make sense of Partial Wedding Planning, and determine if this is the right option for you.

So What is Included?

Red and gold wedding invitation set from minted.com

Each wedding planner will have different package options for ‘Partial Wedding Planning’ and this can be a key factor in choosing what planner you want to work with. Most partial packages will include day of wedding management, but may differ from there:

  • Some will offer a set amount of hours of planning assistance, so for example you may have 10 hours of planning help. This can be used for consultations, phone calls, or vendor meetings but will all be tracked. We suggest being wary of this option. Typically you either have a couple who uses up time on topics they didn’t really need to and had no help for other more important planning items. Or you have a planner who will pick and choose when they want to help. Overall we think this is not a clear option as so many aspects of planning cannot be broken down by a simple time frame.
  • Other planners will simply organize the planning process for you. They will set your budget, timelines, calendar reminders and may offer light support via phone or email throughout the journey. If you are lacking organizational support this can be great option.
  • Or packages similar to ours where a planner will combine a-la-carte services. This can include setting a budget, wedding design options, vendor recommendations, and monthly consultations. The nice part here is that a planner will typically build a custom package based on your exact needs. It is a great way to ensure you have help where you need it and you’re not paying for help when you don’t.

Sounds Great, But Somethings Missing…

All white 3 tier wedding cake with white flowers on top.

There are many added benefits to hiring a partial planner, having help of any kind is always going to be welcome. But, as you might have noticed most planners will not offer vendor sourcing, negotiation, or contracting in partial planning packages.

You may remember the “Wedding Tax Breakdown” where we explained the added work for vendors when it comes to weddings and why there is typically an up charge for wedding services. This same rule applies to most wedding planners.

Finding, securing, and finalizing details with vendors is a huge workload and can be very time consuming. Especially when you consider that a planner is a “middle man” between you and the vendor. They have to go back and forth between the vendor and client throughout the planning process. Most planners thrive in helping couples design and execute magical weddings, which is why they offer these less expensive partial planning options. But again there is so much work to be done on the vendor side of things, and this cannot be easily tracked and managed using set hours. You cannot do monthly consultations to book vendors, and negotiating pricing and details is one of the largest projects in wedding planning.

So Is a Partial Wedding Planning Package Right For Me?

Outside wedding reception with gold chiavari chairs and hanging lights

This really depends on where you need the most help or support on your wedding journey. If you really need help staying organized, or making decisions, day of wedding management with added consultations is a great option for you. If you feel comfortable working with vendors, but need some design help and expert consultations an a-la-carte package will be perfect. However if the thought of researching vendors, going over contracts, making decisions, and managing payments is all a bit too much you may want to consider adjusting your budget to include a full service planner. Vendor management is one of the biggest jobs in wedding planning while not hard for some couples to do it is time consuming and you will pay for that time.

Again most wedding planners really enjoy designing weddings, working with couples, and bringing an event together. If these are the areas you need help in Partial Wedding Planning does make sense for you. You can bring in an expert to really add the professional touch and will enjoy helping you.

5 Ways Every Bride Can Avoid Paying 50% or More In Dreaded Wedding Taxes!

Budget Bride standing on vintage VW Beetle in the desert with hot air balloons

Disclaimer! I do not condone intentionally lying or deceiving a vendor in order to “save a buck”. What I do recommend is following these wedding planning secrets from a pro, which can help brides that want to have an affordable, and memorable experience without going into debt or draining financial resources. So what is the wedding secret budget bride’s need to know, well first we need to start with wedding tax.

What Is The Wedding Tax?

To be blunt, it is a vendor markup for having to deal with the headaches associated with weddings. Using the example of a bakery, woman calls and orders a cake for a friend’s birthday party. Not complicated, make it cute, and spell the friends name correctly. Done!  Now, same woman calls and wants a wedding cake. But not just any wedding cake, she wants to taste every flavor of cake you make along with different frosting combinations, she wants 3 tiers and each tier a different flavor because Uncle Jeff hates vanilla, and the maid of honor insists raspberry is the hottest trend, and…and… get the idea?

Weddings have become (and may have always been) these massively emotional and egotistical events with overly demanding consumers that want a royal affair regardless of their ability to pay for dominating a vendor’s time and attention. If you are NOT that type of bride, you most certainly may avoid (in most cases) WEDDING TAX.

1.) Keep It Simple

When purchasing décor, florals, or renting tables, chairs, etc. simply request exactly what you need and when. Be prepared in advance and keep the questions minimal. Order a plain white, 2 tier cake, 50 folding chairs, 10 tables, etc. without diving into any details. Do not call and ask “how to” questions; expecting the vendor to spend extra time on your order.

2.) Be Open To New Ideas

Vintage record player used as wedding guest book sign in

If you are working with a wedding planner make it fun! Wedding planners are most often creative people who love weddings. If you have a limited budget give them a bit of input and let them be creative. Plus, delightful people are such a pleasure to work with, you will find vendors, planners, and venues will go above and beyond to ensure you have an incredible experience.

3.) Honesty Always Wins

Wedding budget for budget brides beginners info-graphic

Be up front about what you want and what you can pay for it. You may find a vendor will negotiate especially if you are paying with cash or bank transfer.

4.) Don’t Be Afraid To Shop Around

Cup of tea and saucer with lap top and plant

If the tax is too high keep on looking. It may take you additional leg work to find what you need without paying a high price.

5.) Stand Out From The Crowd

Black bride in modern lace wedding dress with boho hat

Don’t do what everyone else is doing. If something is trendy (like planning your wedding on a numerically fancy date) then vendors will be charging higher prices because they can and will get paid for desirable dates, styles, etc.

Most vendors in the industry love what they do and truly enjoy helping make a couples dream come true. But there is an almost added guarantee that a vendor will have to spend more time, and energy on a wedding than any other special event. Now you understand the wedding secret budget brides need to know! Need some more help on negotiating with vendors? We would love to help, Click Here to request a consultation with our team.

Why Every DIY Bride Should Say I Do To A Day Of Wedding Coordinator

DIY bride with groom in a kilt on the beach

During your wedding planning process you may find yourself wondering if you really need a day of wedding coordinator. Some brides who have enjoyed planning their weddings do not see the need for bringing an expert in on the day. Well, we are to explain why every DIY bride should ask “Will you be my wedding coordinator”. No matter how great of a planner you are the duties of day of coordination are not something you, your partner, or family should be worried about. Here’s why:

1.) Every Event Needs A Host

Think back to the last great party you attended, chances are that party had a great host. No matter how great the decorations, food, or music, every event needs a host to help guide guest throughout the evening. Coordinators are there to help do just that. Instead of a bride or family member telling guest it is time to sit, stand, move, groove, a coordinator will be there to help guest flow throughout the event. No wedding attendee should be confused or lost as to where they should be or what is happening. The coordinator is there to answer questions and make sure someone whether themselves or an MC is providing clear instructions for everyone to follow and enjoy their time.

2.) Couples Should Be Enjoying the Party, Not Coordinating the Wedding

Day of wedding timelines are fairly strict. Typically you are dealing with limited time spans in venues and a lot of “to do’s” to run through. Neither the bride or groom should be looking at their watches checking to make sure things are on time, or that the cake is cut right at 6. Instead you as a couple should be in the moment savoring every minute of celebrating with your loved ones. Hire someone to handle this for you! A good coordinator will be strict on time management to make sure everything you would like to happen, happens and happens on time. This will ensure a stress free day for you, leading to a magical wedding experience.

3.) Weddings Are Business Transactions

Wedding coordinator with brown hair

While not as fairytale as some would like to believe, a wedding is one big business transaction between different vendors. Most DIY brides save money but using different vendors for every part of the day, hunting down the best deal can save a lot during the planning process. What this means though is that there is a lot of business to be handled during the wedding. All of these different vendors will need a single leader to ensure everyone is doing their part, and working cohesively together. Step in your coordinator, a single point of contact throughout the entire day. Any decisions that need to made, adjustments throughout the day, and end of event settlements will all run through your coordinator. Again the bride, groom, and family should all be enjoying the party and celebrating, not running around with tipping all your vendors at the end of the night.

4.) Last Call

Champagne bottle in ice bucket for wedding

Unfortunately every great party must come to an end, and that end is normally easier said than done. With a great coordinators help everyone has had far too much fun and may not want to call it quits for last call. A coordinator will help ease this transition by gently guiding guest to their next destination in a timely manner. Most wedding venues have strict end times due to noise, and staffing restrictions. This can cause a couple a lot of headache or even fee’s if that time is not upheld. Let someone else watch that time and do the nudging while you run off to enjoy the rest of the night!

We fully believe in every couple has the ability to plan an amazing wedding themselves, but also believe that a little expert help can make a big difference in your ability to enjoy the day. So whether you ask our team or another every DIY bride should be asking “will you be my wedding coordinator?”. Click Here to request a complimentary wedding consultation.

How to choose the best bridesmaid style no matter your bridal party size

Bridesmaids holding wedding bouquets in dusty blue bridesmaid dresses

While the bride and her gown are the real stars of any wedding the bridesmaids can really help to enhance that beauty or sometimes even distract from it. With this in mind we have come up with the perfect bridesmaid dress styles for any bridal party size. This way your bride tribe will look and feel gorgeous only adding to the beauty of the day. One of the biggest things to keep in mind when selecting bridesmaid dresses is how the photos from the ceremony will look. If you pick dresses that are too loud the attention may be drawn away form the bride and be focused just on the bridal party. On the other hand you always want to make sure your girls look and feel beautiful that way everyone has big smiles the day of.

1 Bridesmaid or 1 Maid of Honor

Boho bride with bridesmaid in taupe boho bridesmaid dress

The average size for a bridal party floats between 3-5 bridesmaids. Most images you see online and while shopping for dresses will feature a bridal party of this size. This can make it difficult to know what styles will look best for your smaller party though. One big benefit to having just one bestie is you do not have to navigate different body types or skin tones. Together you can find a flattering dress perfect for her and know she will look and feel her best. We suggest keeping things simple here. An understated dress that seamlessly fits in with your wedding theme is the perfect option here. You may opt for a tea length dress to avoid your gown looking too similar to the bridesmaid dress.

Keep It Simple For 2 Bridesmaids

For two bridesmaid we highly suggest keeping the dresses and colors the same. With two girls having different styles or colors can make your bridal party seem uncoordinated and confusing. This is where you will want to go for an elegant put together look. We suggest long gowns, form fitting or flowing depending on what Is most flattering for your party. Along with the same color for both. Keep this in mind when finalizing your wedding colors and bridal party, you don’t want to go with a pastel pink if one of your girls has very fair skin. That will lead to washed out photos of her, or darkened photos of you. Remember, if your girls don’t look good your photos aren’t going to either. Picking colors that flatter everyone is very important when making this decision.

Perfect Trends For 3-5 Bridesmaids

The bridal party sweet spot. This bridal party size is where you can find the most inspiration online. No matter your wedding colors, or theme there is tons and tons to pull from here. So we have included our favorite trending styles below. We do suggest still staying in the same color house but you can start to play with some different dress styles.

Elegance With 5+ Bridesmaids

Bride with her bridesmaid in all black bridesmaid dresses

Having more than 5 girls in your wedding party can really make a statement and lead to gorgeous photos. However if you are keeping a more traditional wedding theme you may want to keep your girls in the same colors. You will most likely need to include some different dress styles as finding one gown that will fit everyone in a flattering way will be difficult. We absolutely love to see black bridesmaids dresses fall in this category! Your wedding can instantly look like it is off the pages of vogue when making a statement like this.

5+ Bridesmaid For A Trendy Bride

If you have chosen to have a group of girls with you but also a more contemporary wedding theme, this is where you can really have some fun with colors! When you have enough girls to pull it off doing a color wheel can be so chic. We have included some inspiration below along with a link to BrideSide who specialize in this look!

4 Reasons every bride should invest in virtual wedding consultations.

Boho wedding ceremony on a beach. Bride in white dress with groom in tan suit

We are major fans of all our DIY brides planning magical weddings on their reality budgets. We continue to find new ways to help educate and support any bride taking the wedding planning challenge head on. With that said we do have 1 major tip to help any bride plan your DIY wedding like a pro. Utilize virtual wedding consultations! We fully believe that not every bride needs a full service wedding planner but do have 4 reasons every bride should invest in virtual wedding consultations.

1.) You are not a wedding expert

The wedding planner movie with Jennifer Lopez

Again, we are all for planning your own wedding and believe most couples have the capability to do a lot of the ground work of planning. However sometimes having expert advice can really help to get you on the right path. It is as simple as, you don’t know what you don’t know. So while many couples are very capable of doing research, making phone calls, addressing invitations, and finalizing guest list. There are numerous topics such as guest experience, contract negations, or even the best ways to stay organized, that a wedding expert can easily assist with in a short amount of time to get you headed in the right direction.

2.) Don’t let Pinterest overwhelm you

Black and gold night time wedding reception. Black and white dance floor

Pinterest can be a great source for style and decor inspiration. The big thing you have to keep in mind when scrolling through, is that a lot of what you are seeing is done with high budgets for large weddings. If you are planning a more intimate occasion on a conservative budget, including 6 different colors, lots of florals, and vintage furniture can all become extremely expensive and easily look uncoordinated. This is where a one hour video chat can really help. Use this time to present some of your color and theme ideas and let an expert get you on a gorgeous path that can be easily managed. If you are having a hard time with the creative/artsy/decor side of things an experts advice cannot only help paint a picture for you but make sure you don’t spend your whole budget replicating florals you saw online.

3.) Get set up with the best resources for you

Tea cup and saucer sitting on coffee table in front of lap top

There are tons and tons of wedding planning tips, tricks, books, podcast, etc out in the world. While that might seem great, having endless resources to learn from. It can be difficult knowing which are the right resources for you and your bridal style. Reading a book based on planning weddings of $30k if you have budget of $5k is not going to assist on your planning journey. But sharing your budget, ideas, and wants to a consultant is the quickest way to get the most helpful resources for you and your wedding goals.

4.) Covid is not going away

Interracial bride and groom wearing face masks for wedding

One of the biggest ways a full service wedding planner can assist a couple is in their plan B,C, & D strategies. Experts in any special event industry understand that events are ever evolving and you will always need back up plans. To achieve this you have to stay calm, have other resources, and adjust accordingly. This is becoming even more apparent in our current global climate. Many brides are postponing dates, scaling down, or even eloping due to the restrictions being placed on group gatherings. Whether you are optimistically planning for a future wedding or currently adjusting your original pans calling in an expert to help set up back up plans is a smart idea. Again wedding experts have knowledge and resources you do not have access to that can be of great assistance in creative plan B’s.

We believe anyone (when provided the right tools) can plan your DIY wedding like a pro. Virtual consultations are a huge money saving asset available right now that should be utilized. We would love to help get you started with a free 1 hour consultation on any topic of your choosing. (click here to form)

Our 5 Favorite Ways to Celebrate Your Postponed Wedding Date

Save the new wedding date, wedding invitation

The world is slowly returning to a post covid “normal”, and while that is great news, we do know many brides are still struggling with postponement decisions. Even if you had to postpone/reschedule your wedding we think it is very important to still celebrate your originally picked date. Choosing to postpone my wedding was not an easy decision in a time where things did feel a bit dark. So we will absolutely be celebrating on our original date as we look forward to having our dream wedding later on. So here are our 5 favorite ways to celebrate your postponed wedding date. Have fun!

1.) Host a Dinner With Your Wedding Party

Fire and ice roses with yellow flowers in clear vases. Budget wedding centerpieces

Personally I am in love with this idea as it is a great way to celebrate with your wedding party (who also had to change plans). At the same time it gives our DIY brides a chance to test any DIY wedding projects you were planning for the wedding. I.E: Flower arrangements, place cards, centerpieces, hair and/or makeup ideas, even a signature wedding cocktail. (Top 5 Signature Wedding Cocktails)

To help tie in some practice we think it is best to coordinate your dinner party with your original wedding theme. This way you can play with colors, and arrangements before the big day. I will be doing all of my own floral arrangements so am going to use this as a chance to practice some center pieces or even a bouquet option for display.

Tip: Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Sprouts, or a farmers market, are perfect places to snag some gorgeous flowers. I find the organic stores have great prices for more unique options. I also did this for our engagement photos!

2.) Play the WBL Engagement Game

Engagement game for a newly engaged couple

This one is pretty straight forward and can be combined with other ideas on the list. We suggest having a fun game night with your love starting off with our newlywed game! Some couples play during their bachelor/bachelorette parties, or during the reception so it is a fun way to tie in some postponed festivities. To make things a bit more fun incorporating a drink for wrong answers challenge is perfect!

3.) 24 Hour Honeymoon

Depending on where you live and what restrictions are in place this might look a little different for everyone. One sure fire way to get away is camping. Most parks, and campsites are open so pack up your tent, sleeping bags, and some food for a perfect getaway. Not only is this a fun way to celebrate, but we love the idea of getting away from the chaos of the world right now. Disconnecting and being with your hunny is the perfect way to share some joy as you look forward to the future.

4.) Wine Making Night

I absolutely love this idea especially if your wedding is more than a year away. This way you can let the wine settle and open it on your wedding night or during your honeymoon!

We definitely suggest grabbing one or two bottles of your favorite wine and having fun with it. No guarantees the wine will taste amazing but it is so much fun to experiment with it and you never know what wine making skills you might have! I linked one of the less expensive versions on amazon below!

5.) Post Covid Goals Collage

So I know this one might sound a bit cheesy but hang in there with me! The world has been a crazy place lately and it has been increasingly difficult to set goals, and look forward to the future when things seem so unsure. So to help get you back on the positive light track together pick 10 goals for the next year. Whether it be work changes, vacations, or even date nights. Print past pictures of happy times and new ones of your set goals. Print everything out and make it into a fun collage. This can be kept to yourself or even shared at your wedding. The best way to keep moving forward is to have something to look forward too!

Here’s one to help get you started!

Should I Postpone my wedding? That truly is the burning question.

There you are, happily planning away; making arrangements, sending deposits, tasting cakes, and Whammo! COVID-19 hits and our world is completely rocked. In a matter of weeks our booming economy has been decimated, lives lost, jobs lost, businesses closed, and in some states, there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight. The whole situation feels like a bad sci-fi movie that we can’t tear ourselves away from. Collectively, we are afraid, we are in mourning, and we need a sense of security and control restored.

The truth is, this is not the first time a global crisis has impacted us, and it most definitely will not be the last. Human beings have endured famine, pandemics, world wars, financial collapses, natural disasters and that is to just name a few.  We have survived and thrived over and over again; the key right now is to stay healthy, stay safe, and conserve your resources!

We know the crisis will end and it is a beautiful thing to be looking toward the future with hope; BUT the question remains, when will it end? When will we return closer to normal? And should I postpone my wedding?

Here is some food for thought to help you decide if you should or shouldn’t reschedule as well as quick tips if you do need to make adjustments.

Married couple wearing face masks

#1 – Are you still employed?

YES – If you are still employed, your wedding date is October 2020 or later and you have the financial resources to host your wedding as planned then my advice is do not reschedule. Keep on as planned but remain flexible, this situation is fluid and can change drastically at any moment.

NO – if you are no longer employed (whether laid off or furloughed), absolutely, 100% reschedule. Conserve your resources! Your security and safety are far more important right now. TIP: With COVID-19 all across the country gatherings of 10 or more are restricted. Call your venue and your vendors (if you have already gotten to this step in planning) and share with them you have been laid off due to COVID-19, request a new date (go with your original planned time of year or give yourself at least 1 year to financially recover).

#2 – Is your wedding planned prior to October 2020?

YES – I would consider rescheduling to 2021 or start modifying arrangements to ensure you are practicing social distancing during your celebration. Work with your venue, wedding planner, etc. to find the best way to maintain your ceremony and reception while keeping yourself and your guests safe. TIP: each guest requires 36 sq. ft to maintain the CDC recommended 6’ physical distance, you may safely use this number with your venue to rearrange space. You may need to reduce your guest list in order to achieve this.

NO – Don’t reschedule but remember to stay flexible! You may need to make arrangements to ensure physical distancing during your ceremony and reception.

#3 – Don’t want to reschedule, but you are unemployed and want to get married before the end of 2020?

If this applies to you we have you covered! It is time to tighten down the hatches and plan an intimate, unique, and creative celebration. Start thinking patio, backyard wedding with 10 people in person and more guests virtually.

asian woman with simple bridal veil

Have you ever stopped to consider where wedding traditions come from or better yet, how YOU feel about them? There are countless traditions from wedding veils to grooms’ cake and something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and depending on which ones you honor they can (in some cultures) make or break an entire marriage. Whether it’s having your ceremony in a church or the bride only wearing white, these traditions have become a staple of many wedding ceremonies and wedding budgets.

Not that I am against tradition, quite the opposite is true! My take on traditions comes down to a financial one. When you are stretching your dollars to make your day magical you need to consider the impact a tradition has on your budget. When you really think about the value or purpose; are you participating because you want to or because “they” say you have too? I think it’s about time we decide; should they stay, or should they go!

The Wedding Veil

In the past century, the veil has been used to signify a bride’s virtue and for many it has become a beautiful accessory completing a bride’s glamourous look. Although the exact origin of the veil tradition is unknown, research has uncovered the veil is rooted in pretty dark and dirty soil. In the tradition of arranged marriages; daughters who were used as a commodity in the union of families were often unseen by the groom before the wedding day. The veil was used to cover the bride’s face until after the ceremony was complete ensuring the groom wouldn’t back out of the deal!

Many historians agree that the veil first surfaced in ancient Roman wedding ceremonies as a way to protect the bride from evil spirits who were jealous of her happiness and were seeking to ruin the union. For centuries European women wore veils covering their hair for reasons like mourning and to signify “belonging” to a male.

The veil tradition has clearly evolved from it’s dark past and in some families has become a bridal heirloom. Unlike a passed down wedding dress, which would be nearly impossible, the veil has found a place in family traditions as an item that is shared among the women connecting them to their heritage. In this case, a veil worn by a mother is passed down to her daughters and from them to their daughters and so on. The veil remains unchanged and is an accessory exclusively for the daughters sharing the bloodline of the matriarch.

The Bouquet

As with every part of your wedding the decision is up to you! If you love how a veil looks and want a dramatic accessory for your day, absolutely go for it. If you want to embrace and honor the tradition of your family’s brides I say, go all in. For those of you that are considering purchasing a veil, you can expect the cost to start around $25 reaching upwards of $600. Maybe consider ditching the veil if you are giving up something that has greater meaning to you. Do you really need to ward off evil spirits or hide your beautiful face just in case the groom wants to change his mind?

Evil spirits were definitely “a thing” back in the day, bridal traditions are steeped in superstition. The origin of the bouquet is no exception and was another way to protect the bride from evil energies. Unlike today’s elaborate bouquets they used to be filled with bunches of garlic, herbs, and spices to ward off bad spirits. It was also believed the bouquet was a preventive tool to warding off the plague.

As with so many traditions that evolve over time, the bouquet has become a staple in nearly all weddings around the world. Brides typically select flowers based on their overall theme and color scheme or their personal favorites. The bridal bouquet is a perfect way to infuse your style into your wedding look. By honoring the idea of old (warding off evil spirits and energy) and the new (celebrating your personal style) you may create a remarkable piece for your day without breaking the bank. The bouquet can be as simple as a bunch of wild picked lavender or as elaborate as your imagination and wallet will take you.

Something Old, Something New, Something Blue, Something Borrowed

Something Old:
This to help tie the bride’s family, and “past” to her new future.

Something New:
Represents the brides upcoming life with her new husband.

Something Borrowed:
This should be from someone in a successful marriage to pass on good luck.

Something Blue:
Stands for faithfulness, loyalty and purity.

For some brides this can be a wonderful way to incorporate family heirlooms or gifts on your wedding day. For others, that may not have family heirlooms or deep-rooted relationships, this can be an unnecessarily stressful checklist. Finding items that check every box can add up and your guests will never notice the difference.

Before embracing a tradition, I propose you ask yourself:

  • Will (a veil, bouquet, or something blue) enhance the celebration for you or your partner? If yes, then go for it and be sure you budget accordingly. If no, it’s time for the age-old tradition to GO.
  • Will it your guest’s experience be better? If no, this is a strong reason for not using time or energy.

Join us for several tradition discussions and see which ones should stay and which ones should go!

close image of wedding rings around a brides waist
Photo by Emma Bauso from Pexels

How many of you started looking for an engagement ring before you even had a serious boyfriend? If you are like me, the idea of a lifelong romance started at an early age and so did the planning. Funny thing is when I began dreaming up my perfect wedding I never once thought about cost and especially not the cost of my ring!  Fast forward a decade and yours truly is in a serious relationship and getting ready to take the engagement ring plunge. My real research began, and can I tell you, the world of engagement rings is daunting.

Cut, color, brand, jeweler, style…suddenly my dream ring has turned into a nightmare fueled by Pinterest perfection and Instagram envy.

A Tiffany costs how much?

Before the internet and search sites like Pinterest, the whole engagement ring process started at a local jeweler or shopping mall with retailers like Kay, Jared, and for the bougie types, it was Cartier or Tiffany. I decided I would start the old-fashioned way. I went straight to the Caesars Forum shops to the Cartier counter because why not, you only get married once…if you do it right!

Ummmmm… $5000 for a gold band? What? Are you kidding? I changed tactic and went to a local jeweler. Again, sticker shock and you want to know why? Its not because diamonds and gold crafted in a fancy little ornament fashioned for your finger is truly worth thousands upon thousands of dllars.. NO, it’s the MARK UP! Anywhere from 1000%-3000%! My vision of a glamorous ring was getting very blurry. So I thought, okay, let’s try a second hand jeweler aka Pawn Shop and heck, I even threw in Walmart because lets be honest, once the ring is on your finger no one is looking at the purchase receipt.

Funny thing is, I found the same styles and types of rings, similar quality diamonds and all not that different of prices. One sales associate even told me the only place to buy a diamond is Costco because they have a flat markup of 30% on the highest quality diamonds which are bought in bulk. Exhausted and pretty disappointed I decided to put on my PJs, grab a glass of Pinot and my laptop to take my journey online.

First, I will 100% admit that I love online shopping. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy my fair share of Target, Hobby Lobby and Ross excursions but online is easier to explore, compare, and even design my own perfect ring. Which led to the discovery of an entirely new option, lab created diamonds.  Having no clue what lab created meant while absolutely loving the look and price drove me to do some digging and here is what I learned:

  • Not to be confused with Cubic Zirconia, lab created diamonds have the same chemical properties as a diamond mined from the earth.
  • Because they are created in a lab and not from the earth this makes them nearly perfect in cut and clarity.
  • They are also 100% ethically sourced, meaning they protect against human rights abuses. This is an amazing option for anyone concerned about the cruelties associated with mining.
  • Using a jewelry loupe, manmade diamonds are nearly impossible to differentiate from natural diamonds.
  • Most importantly the diamonds are on average 25% less expensive than traditional ones!

Bottom line my friends, even if your budget is low you still have the opportunity to get that Pinterest ring at a wallet friendly price. That seems like a total win/win to me, but to be safe I decided to bring in the big guns… I called my mom. She agreed that it is a great option to get the most for your money, but only if you first consider:

  • While it is 25% less expensive upon initial purchase your resale value could be greatly diminished. It will depreciate unlike a natural diamond. If you are looking at this as an investment, it’s not the best option.
  • Are you a traditionalist? If so, you most likely want to stick with a natural diamond as it is hard to beat the tried and true.
  • Do you like the idea of a family heirloom that is passed from generation to generation? Once again you will want to stick with the natural diamond as it will hold not only its value but strength.

Here is my take, everything depends first on your budget and second on the shopping or engagement experience you are after. Before venturing on your ring journey ask yourself:

  1. Do you need people to know you have a luxury branded ring?
  2. Do you plan on keeping the ring forever or do you see yourself upgrading after 10 years? 20 years?
  3. Do you want something vintage? Custom made?
  4. Are you going to wear a band day to day and only wear the fancy ring on special occasions?
  5. Do you want to be surprised and not involved at all?

After looking at everything and considering all options, I am a big fan of the lab created diamonds. They are gorgeous diamonds that for many couples affords them many more options in ring sizes and styles. Going with the lab created diamond affords you the option of getting your dream ring at an affordable cost and I say go for it! No one needs to know you took an alternate route, they just need to know that you have a beautiful ring you are excited to show off.
